Still from the movie. The teacher dances while his students watch him. They are in a forrest.

Schools’ Programme

The Teacher Who Promised the Sea

ESFF marks its eleventh year as part of the autumn cultural scene in Scotland. Throughout our history, we have demonstrated a solid educational commitment to students learning Spanish as a foreign language in primary and secondary schools.

We want to invite students and their teachers to an exclusive in-person screening of the following film for secondary schools this October.

**ESFF has selected The Teacher Who Promised the Sea for its exploration of historical memory and the Spanish Civil War, intertwining two stories across the present and the past. However, it should be noted that, due to the coexistence of different criteria, concepts, and customs across various countries, it is solely the responsibility of teaching staff to assess whether the content meets the appropriate ethical standards for viewing by the students in their care.

Synopsis

In 1935, Antoni Benaiges was hired as a teacher in a small, isolated village in Burgos, Spain. There, he established an intense relationship with his students, to whom he made a promise: to take them to see the sea for the first time in their lives. 75 years later, Ariadna, the granddaughter of one of those students, discovers that her grandfather has been searching for the remains of his father, who disappeared during the Civil War. Determined to help him, she travels to Burgos, where they are exhuming a mass grave in which he could be buried. During her stay there, she learns about the young teacher from Tarragona who taught her grandfather before the war.

SPANISH CINEMA IN THE CLASSROOM

This October, we want to bring cinema into classrooms across the UK with the following proposal: a film that can be comfortably viewed in class simply by requesting an access code for one week, from 30th September to 4th October. The film will be accompanied by worksheets to explore its themes in depth.

El olivo (30th September -4th October)

Alma is a 20-year-old woman who works on a chicken farm in a town in the province of Castellón. When her grandfather, who stopped talking years ago, decides to stop eating too, Alma believes that the only thing to save him is to recover the thousand-year-old olive tree the family sold against his will 12 years ago. Without telling the truth, without a plan and with barely any money, Alma embarks with her uncle “Alcachofa”, her work colleague Rafa, her friends Wiki and Adelle, and her entire town on an impossible task: to recover the monumental olive tree replanted somewhere in Europe, to bring it back to the family farmhouse.
