The Unexpected Life

Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carmen Ruiz | Dir: Jorge Torregrosa
2014
Juanito is a Spanish actor living in New York. His career doesn't take off; he is getting older and carries on performing in small Spanish plays whilst working as a waiter in a Spanish deli. When he receives the visit of his apparently successful cousin, Jorge, who plans to spend one month in New York in Juanito's apartment, he will have to confront his reality.

A co-production between Spain and the US, The Unexpected Life analyses how far we can go with our juvenile dreams and how harsh realities and daily routines can, nevertheless, hide unpredictable happiness.

**The ESFF is very excited to welcome the famous Spanish novelist and screenwriter of 'The Unexpected Life', Elvira Lindo, who will present the film and answer some questions of the audience (on Friday 2nd only).

Reviews

"Torregrossa, with the invaluable support of Carmen Ruiz, Javier Cámara, and Raúl Arévalo, has discovered the perfect bitterness of tone for a comedy that rises above its jokes." (Carlos Marañón, Cinemanía)

"A convincing generational comedy.... And the best part: a magnificent Javier Cámara." (M. Torreiro, Fotogramas)

"A dramatic and profoundly melancholy comedy that stays on its feet thanks to the closeness we feel to the characters, rendered completely credible thanks to the combined effort of the director, screenwriter, and actors." (Jordi Batlle Caminal, Diario La Vanguardia)
